Skene: Secluded Selves is a project of art and music collaborative work for the purpose of experimenting a possibility of communication between different art genres by linking languages which have different contexts including image, sound and text. It is an exploration on serial expansion and spatial visualization of a specific concept that is shown as psychological characteristics through inner introspection, and on interpersonal sympathy with audience.
The artists of this project accepted exterior conditions as natural happening and free interpersonal interactions, which made them do their work impromptu. Furthermore, they considered intercommunications between them as the process of conflict and acceptance when each other's meaning was not understood exactly. The work style of these artists, which might look like conversations, induced the artists to make diverse interpretations in creating their work without any certain rule or form, by using each artist's fundamental characteristics of exchanged languages, background knowledge and imagination. As audience as well as producers, each of them reflected the influence from the others' work on her own work, and so-produced new works influenced another work.
The work process is based mostly on the circulatory flow of painting to song and song to painting again. In painting, it is formed in the style of series in order to visualize various factors and changes in music including twirls, tone of each musical instrument, tension of each section suspended suddenly, etc. On the contrary, music work was produced in auditory format by picking up one theme that influenced the piece of painting series to be expressed, and expressing the motif, paint brush touching, and colors of the painting through grammar of composition. Also, in order to express the compressed moment which is the characteristic of time of the painting, the music piece was composed as relatively short but powerful tone. Another important baseline of this project, the piece of writing, however, consists of monologue and short play. The artists showed different attitudes towards the writing: One regarded it as an obstacle which limits the degree of imaginative interpretation; another thought it a way of expressing own psychological state; and the other intended to use the complementary relation and the heterogeneous nature of image and writing. Likewise, the works interpreted on the basis of multi-layer language systems were developed as trees branch out, which ultimately forms an irregular and complicated.
The experimentation of the artists was, finally, visualized through limited edition book. It is because the book itself forms such intimate psychological space between the reader and the book, which suits the purpose and concept of this project - "private and secret". Another reason for choosing to publish a book as visualization would be an interesting possibility that the book itself can be suggested as an independent exhibition or record.
As the title of collaborative project implies, the structure of this project is based on the structure of a play of three acts and 10 scenes, which consists of total 50 paintings - 26 music pieces and 55 writings excluding the introduction part. From the point of one self-portrait with a small concept of ‘melancholy and self-salvation’, the project branches out its different directions. The core parts of this project would be the way of expressing that psychological trauma of loss outwardly and the point of attempting to show aesthetic expansion through repetition of such way. Memory and emotion of loss come back repeatedly in its indirect expression style of metaphors or distancing, but they eventually remain as pending state impossible to be recovered. Also, it forms a platform for narrative representing the phenomenon of progress of a specific concept of depression, which implies endless desire for non-existing reality, denial of reality, and imagination to maintain such desire. Furthermore, such method is interlinked with its stylistic aspect so that text intervenes the vague context of image and suggests its intention, which makes serial circulation that meanings unvisualized with the gap between image and text float into the music piece. As a result, the collaborative project forms a multi-level structured piece of work that requires multi-faceted literacy of watching, reading and listening - an interpretation progress of using multiple senses between artists and audience.
